For the first thirty percent or so of the book, it was a light read, like book one, with fairly amusing although not completely believable characters. The tower system is fun (though I always wonder how the food and booze gets to those inns thousands of floors up a tower, with no elevators). However, at the thirty percent mark, it went completely off the rocks, adding a new plot thread (which had been rather obviously foreshadowed in book one) and changing the MC completely. The MC, who had been a decent guy, changes his path, apparently out of cowardice, and becomes complicit in murder and torture, and fights on the side of evil. Stomach churning stuff. Couldn't finish the book. Won't buy any more books from this author. Even better than the first novel. I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommended for all lovers of high fantasy and compelling storytelling. Now in to Syzygy!
